Hewlett House – Wig Stand Donation

On Monday Bob Lee, Ken Deaner, Les Hoffman and I brought 13 decorated and 6 unfinished wig stands to the Hewlett House Cancer Support Center and met with the Director, Geri Barish. She presented our club with a Certificate of Appreciation. She was very impressed with the work of our club. She gave us a tour of the house and the art center. It is a peaceful and beautiful
setting. They offer many services to cancer patients including social worker support and legal support. There are places for children and teens as well. Everything in the Center is donated and everyone who works there are volunteers. There are no salaries. Local students who need public service credit also work there in all kinds of jobs. They are well set up to receive the wig
stands. Geri also said she was going to ask the Nassau Herald to get in touch with us. I will next contact the Stony Brook Cancer Center and see how many wig stands they can receive and set that up.
Again, thank you to all who participated and are continuing to participate. We are also thankful to Jay Singh of Singh Hardwood Company in Far Rockaway who so generously supplied us with wood for our projects.

An exciting update is that we have worked with Singh Hardwoods in Far Rockaway and Jay has donated a significant amount of Poplar which Les, Jodi and Ken will prepare as blanks which will be available to members to use for this effort!

I read about wig stand donations in the AAW Journal. I made 2 wig stands for people I know with cancer, and they were well received. I would like to do more. At the last meeting this was discussed and there was a huge show of hands of turners also willing to participate. Ken and I went to the Hewlett House, a not for profit, (located in Hewlett) where their goal is to provide patients and their families a safe haven for those whose lives have been touched by cancer. They provide lectures, support groups, bereavement support, breast cancer support, outreach including head coverings, wigs, prostheses, mastectomy bras for patients who are uninsured or under-insured, to help cope with the physical changes of breast cancer and all cancers. These are provided free of charge to these patients. They are part of the Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition. It is run by Geri Barish. They have agreed to a partnership with our club. Ken and I will be happy to bring the wig stands to them as we live nearby. If you are unable to decorate a stand we may be able to call upon students from the community to paint your project. Hewlett House has an art component. We may also ask students from Northport High School to decorate as well.
